Where to learn the GameMaker Studio!
For starters, there are a bunch of YouTube tutorials where you can learn the very basics of game development with GameMaker so you can get your character walking to creating spectacular 2D shaders for your game. Also, things to know before starting your first game is that you won't be able to make the next Call of Duty or The next big RPG game. It's always best to start small and know what you can do before you start making your first real game on your own.
Why you should start small!
Well, before we get into that there are a few things you gotta know before starting on your first game that you are gonna pour countless hours of work (so many sleepless nights just to fix the movement)you first gotta get organized.
First things first when getting organized your gonna have to write a Game Developers Document (GDD) which you can write anywhere digitally or on paper, the point is you gotta brainstorm the game you wanna make and write it down on there. Which this is where the minimum viable product comes into play when creating a game. With the minimum viable product, you're essentially making a game but without all the features. For example, Mario the minimum viable product for Mario is just a guy moving side to side jumping over holes in the ground, that's all there is to it when creating something small. From that minimum viable product of a man running and jumping, you can add more features like power ups, more enemies, or even a boss who knows.
Also, DO NOT spend more than 2 - 3 months on your minimum viable product since your goal on it is to make the smallest but most important mechanics in your game like movement and collisions in a small amount of time. For example, you could do a month just creating all the mechanics and making sure it works than in a week or two work on collisions. After getting all the important things out of the way you can start planning on doing all those features you want in your game!
